Abstract
Background and Objectives : The aim of this study was to compare the functional outcome of the conventional and modified radial forearm free flap reconstruction for oropharygeal defects. Materials and Methods : A retrospective review was
conducted
for
14 patients undergoing extirpation with primary soft tissue reconstruction from May 1994 to July 1999. Six patients underwent reconstruction with the conventional radial forearm free flap and eight patients received a modified radial forearm free
flap.
Results : The velopharyngeal insufficiency score such as rhinolalia and nasal regurgitation was higher in the group reconstructed with the modified radial forearm free flap than in the group reconstructed with the conventional radial forearm free
flap
or the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap. But there was no statistical significance between the two groups. Conclusion : We concluded that the modified radial forearm free flap can be beneficial to reducing the functional deficits in
oropharyngeal
reconstruction.
